  • It's the littlest things...

As we approach a new training season in Illinois, we get this:

All Continuing Education (CE) classes are being suspended beginning with classes on Monday, March 16, 2020. Classes are currently targeted to resume on Monday, April 13, 2020. As you know, the circumstances of the pandemic are evolving rapidly.
    ...
Most Motorcycle Safety classes will be cancelled. Because we already schedule training ranges to their maximum usage, there is little opportunity to reschedule them.
Chicago has banned all gatherings of 1000 or more people, except at the places where a lot of random interaction occurs with people who may be infected (like airports, train stations, public transportation).

Which means that my anime convention is probably soon to be cancelled.

Stocked up on dog food and ventured into costco today for supplies, it was almost surreal. Time to go into hibernation for a few weeks.

Got a call from someone asking if I'd heard that the state of Illinois is asking all bars to close for two weeks. "Should I get a gun for protection, in case people start rampaging?"

Went shopping. The things we were low on, there was plenty of. Except for Kleenex, Puffs, or even generic tissue. Toilet paper? Empty racks. Paper towels? Empty racks. Napkins? How many do you want? Hand sanitizer? There's supposed to be a couple of guys in Texas with 17,000 bottles because Amazon and eBay both refuse to take their listings.

No, just circle your house with biohazard warning tape, everybody will leave you alone.

I've never eaten better. Now is the time to take good care of your body and stay very healthy, assume you have the thing already and start fighting it, prepare to get good at taking care of those who succumb to it.

I'm good to go, I'm self quarantined to a great riding area.

They should be spending the time thinking about how to deal with it instead.

Like tell people to stop vaping anywhere!
and don't flush anything that is not toilet paper or has not gone past your lips first

Why we are being told to "Shelter in place": "Cower in place" did not do well in focus group testing.

Well, some things continue, despite the lockdowns. Periodically, I'm tracking a twin-engine aircraft doing aerial photograph across the northern Illinois area. Landscapers are landscaping, pizza delivery people are delivering pizzas, power companies are paying to have trees trimmed away from power lines, people are letting controlled burns become uncontrolled, etc.

The "limit how many in the store" has now spread to Walmarts this week. Seems strange that they want people to line up to get in, so that they can keep "social distance" inside the store. But at least they haven't shut down the "order and pick up" service. But they did cut all overnight hours, so it you want to avoid lines... well, you have to come back when there are lines.

The local Dominos removed all their seating, so you aren't tempted to sit down and wait for your order to be cooked.

LOTS of people doing yard work. When the cower-in-place rules lift, we'll probably have the cleanest lawns in decades, as people fight their boredom.

You need to get good at it, social distancing that is.
Rode most of today, it's pretty easy to stay busy as usual when you live in the middle of your riding area and the lake is almost completely thawed out plus I'm ancient so I don't even need a fishing license any more! Wife and I have seen a total of 7 other humans in the past 3 weeks, it's actually very nice.

Oh and thank you California you grow good oranges

Newest thing, in light of tigers in zoos getting COVID... While self-isolating, avoid contact with your pets.

                            What's that about?
I was telling people this might become a problem for pets and zoo animals a long time ago, but people preferred to believe it is a human only virus.

Some people are starting to realize that going back to reusable things may not be as safe as single-use versions.

Grocery bags: Local city decided to go with a 10 cent per bag tax on single-use bags, to encourage people to move to reusable. Three weeks ago, they pulled the tax, when it was pointed out that reusable bags introduced unknown sanitary conditions in the stores, as they were piled on checkout belts and bagging stations. They haven't banned reusables, but that may be a matter of time.

Bottled water: Environmental groups still decry the mass of plastic floating in the oceans, but the governments are encouraging people to drink from their own, disposable bottles, rather than spreading disease with shared cups and bottles. It's put a real kink in my trying to break the family of buying bottled water, even after I've bought them individual reusable bottles. We're back to the, "OK, who's partial bottle is this?!?" routine.
