They did, the softail Rocker with its "cocktail tray" pillion which folded under the seat. IIRC they stopped making it due to an issue with the raked tree.

That's my guess, a raked tree on a frame not sporting much rake yields a shorter trail dimension. Typical Softail frame rake is 31-33 degrees...my Shadow came from the factory with 35 and 6" trail so there's wiggle room for a raked tree but to try the same on my 30 w/4" trail Rebel frame is a recipe for disaster. There's a reason why many aftermarket outfits discontinued raked trees on Harleys, they don't come with enough rake & trail to drop the trail dimension and people were making bolt-on death traps (and consequently suing the parts companies for making such a "dangerous" item). You'd think a manufacturer engineer might be cued into that stuff.

There's a certain irony how Japan has managed to out-Americanize a trend. First it was Kawasaki with their Vulcan Drifters kicking Gilroy Indian's aesthetic ass and then Honda makes the best looking factory chopper. Sadly they've gone overboard with the all blacked out bullshit that Harley started with their night Train in the mid 90's.

    Nah...Buells were air cooled.

Still, it's a pity Erik isn't around to massage a butt load of power out of the HD mill like he did with those 1950's designs he was stuck with. Squeezing an extra 50%-plus out of those Sportster motors was quite an accomplishment.

Yah, EBR had some innovative ideas. ... imagine what he could do with a liquid cooled motor.
