    I think it’s safe to say (at least for me) that even if I do have my head in the game, 9 times out of 10, I’m nowhere near as good on the bike early in a ride as I am later in the ride. It almost always takes time for the bike to warm, the tires to warm, and the old guy to warm and so forth. Unless something rattles me I’m better, and ostensibly safer, on the way back.

    "A short trip" being over represented can mean 2 things.
    1. The beginning of the trip there may be "complacency". Or

    2. The return trip may have more "complacency."

    If it were for longer trips, I'd still say "excitement/complacency" and returning would be "fatigue."
