Because the Sportster it is aimed at holds a gallon less?

The Chief has a 5.5 gallon tank, and the Scout only gets 3.3 gallons??? C'mon...

    Dear Indian Motorcycles,
Please make an 1100cc Indian Chief with a 5 gallon tank and two-tone blue paint.
    Sincerely,
    Bob

Like I said, the (1200) Sportsters that the Scout is aimed at have 2.2g tanks, smaller than a 250 Rebel tank.

Well, I wish they'd "aim" a little higher then, like the V-Star 1300's 4.9 gallons, the Triumph America's 5.1 gallons, or the Fat Boy's 5.0 gallons.

Despite the long time lamentations for larger fuel capacities, tiny tanks are the latest rage.

That, and what with the cubic inch competition still being what it is, the only way to lose weight with all that associated displacement is smaller fuel supplies.

I'd like to drop off the designers halfway between Las Vegas and Clayton on a hot summer day and let them walk to the nearest gas station. That's 90 miles to Clayton, or 90 miles to Las Vegas. That would end the "tiny tanks" trend.

my sportster, and the newer ones with the peanut tank, has a 3.3 gallon tank (2.5 with a .8 reserve)
the sportsters with the custom tanks are 4.5 gallons (not sure the reserve amount).

the older sportster peanut tanks may have been around 2.2 gallons.

ETA i see the throwback sportrters (48 and 72) have the smaller 2.1 gallon tanks.

if extended range is what you need:
One alternative to extra fuel capacity is improved fuel efficiency

Another is to stow extra fuel somewhere very clever for when you are going on very long rides

Yep, those are the ones I was referring to..."throwback" Indian versus throwback Sporties.
