Do I really need to point out the glaring flaw in this argument?

A parent can set whatever limits for their children they want. They're the parent, and that's their child. But to quote a bumper sticker I saw a while back, "The government ain't yo baby daddy". Government is not a parental figure, guardian, spiritual leader, or adviser. Sadly, the number of people who want government to play the role of mommy and daddy is growing everyday. This thread being a great example.

The bottom line Kottenanny is that you and I will never agree on this subject. As I stated previously, the HP number is irrelevant. It's the major flaw in the principle of the whole thing I have the issue with. It's merely a difference in opinions and philosophy. Which is fine. It's what makes the world go 'round. Good luck to you and your fellow countrymen with all of your regulatory dreams. Hopefully they won't funnel down south. It's bad enough that we have politicians here who are trying to tell us what we can legally eat.

More of less read it & noted my'00 Honda 929 or the '03 Honda are not in a lot of pile-ups. Plus the bit I road even the Honda 1000ss aport bikes does not have even close to max speed.

The bit in Ontario that woudl send me up the wall for sure.

I noted the bit about large & dual LP on m/cs. So many yrs ago, I had a gal friend on my '47 LE Velocette 175cc flat opposed liquid cooled bike, to to to a classical orchestra to practice. Only the cops stopped me & yes I told them this was a Matchless 500cc scrambler due to the wings, no accidently I had left my DL on the bed. Though the one cop said "IS THAT BIKE RUNNING RIDHT NOW?" sO TOLD HIM IT WAS & WAS THE QUITEST M/C IN ENGLAND & QUITER THEN A BICYCLE COMMING UP SOME LORD'S PLACE TO CHECK OUT".

i MENTIONED THAT THE FACORY MAKING THIS M/C WERE DISTURBED AT BEING ABLE TO HEAR THE BREAKING POINTS OPENING & CLOSING. tHAT HAD HIM OUT & DOWN TO THE KNEES TO LISTEN & WAS AMAZED FOR HE COULD HEAR THE SAME. i told them I had been working on the horn & forgot the from LP. So I was to turn up the next day with a valid DL a & I did.

My gf liked looking for people at a bus stop & expecting a lot of noise, but heads would all turn around as I passed by for the most they could hear were the tyres & any grit on the pavement. A neighbor accustom so some of my other bikes actually spoke to my father telling him that he was impressed with the electric m/c I sometimes road.
Remember all the others on the road are crazy & out to kill you!!!!!!

And in principle, I agree - the government should stay out of lives. However, what is way more important than simple removal of all government intrusion is simply making sure that any government intrusion that does occur is sensible.

I live in a country where the level of government intrusion into daily life is mind-boggling. Yet, most of it is not really intrusion, per se, but general standards-setting. The rule about stick shift vs automatic (your license gets branded if you take the exam in an automatic), the 125cc and 37hp rules, and a bunch of other stuff make sense because they are there to serve a purpose, not cater to political whims. The ABS ruling is a bit sketchy, but no more sketchy that the TC legislation in the US. The end result of the 37hp rule has been that tons of bikes kissing the limit or electronically throttled to it are available here. What could possibly be better than a solid beginner bike that is one ECU re-map away from being a great intermediate bike, too?

If a government feels it necessary to intrude in my life, they had better do it in a sensible manner.

You'd commented on this earlier in this thread, but I gotta admit, I didn't put it together until just now...because it's just so out of context. If you're talking about the "Chick Fil A" controversy, from what I've read, that has nothing to do with what Americans can eat, but everything to do with whether or not a chain of restaurants can publicly discriminate against certain people. Completely different things, and has no relevance to the discussion in this thread.

I think atomicalex puts it very well--there's a difference between "government intrusion" and "standards setting." But you're right, we may never agree on this...

He might be referring to policies like those in Cali about food labeling, limiting access to fast food and such. In New York, certain types of cooking oils were banned because they were too "fatty". Etc.

Has nothing to do with a CEO exercising his right to free speech.

Do a search for things like "NYC drink ban" where they're trying to limit the size of the drink you can purchase at a convenience store...for your safety. Of course, you can buy 12 16oz Cokes. But don't dare ask for 1 32oz. That might kill you.

Medical experts spared no rhetoric in hailing the proposal as a way to protect the public

There are several cases of public schools telling parents that they can no longer send their kids to school with their own lunch. Google things like "Chicago public school lunch ban".

Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students

    The mentioned "cooking oil" bans.

    And on and on.

There are examples popping up everywhere in the U.S.

Of course it's all OK, because these "government restrictions" are in the interest of "our safety" and only have our best interest at heart..

I think Clay was reffering to the New York ban on sizes of sodas, trans fats, etc. and that does have relevance to this. IMHO
