The work of art has been ID'ed for me on another board: "Cracks in the Clouds" by Dan Colen, on display from the Gagosian Gallery, which is evidently prestigious and well-known in the world of modern art.

This review from the staff art critic of New York magazine of was pretty scathing though:

Funny thing...I read the snippet and thought, "Hmm...sounds like Jerry Saltz." It was. After watching two seasons on "Work of Art," a show in which he's a judge, I find him to be mostly a blowhard who proves more than anything or anyone that art is subjective.
