Flying high at 11,000 feet!
What could be better than cool Colorado weather, alpine mountain views, and twisty roads? Not much! The 2009 BBO West Side Gathering once again lived up to its reputation as the best party west of the Mississippi. With BBO members riding from as far away as Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, and California, the group spent three days partaking of good food, beverage, and beautiful mountain roads. Friday night the festivities focused on fine food at Francisco's in downtown Durango. A stop at one of the local stores featuring a wide selection of microbrews followed dinner, with a lot of taste testing happening at the Potato Ranch afterwards.
Saturday, it was up early to eat more good food at Christina's. Then, off to ride "the loop," more commonly known as the San Juan Scenic Byway. This year, the group rode the loop backwards (counterclockwise) as opposed to previous years when we followed the traditional clockwise route. Plenty of photo ops for everyone along the way, as well as great riding and even better companionship.
Saturday night is the big BBQ/bonfire event at the Potato Ranch, and this year was no exception. Plenty of food, and lots of silliness around the bonfire. This year's surprise, thanks to Bugguts and Orpheus, was two cases of Bugjuice shipped all the way from Georgia!! Sunday, there was a group ride to tour the desert of northwestern New Mexico, with stops near Shiprock and at the Four Corners monument.
After the Sunday ride was the Big Bike Swaperoo(tm), which is always entertaining and does nothing to halt the rampant spread of SMAS. More festivities at dinner Sunday night, and all too soon it was time to get some sleep in preparation for Monday, when everyone has to head back home.
This was the fourth year of the gathering in Durango, and every year just gets better. To read about all the fun and see pictures of incredible scenery from this unique part of the country, go here, and start making your plans to join us next year!
1st Annual Rain or 'Shine Ride
Rain and 'Shine….We’ll ride!
With a 70% chance of thunderstorms, that seemed to be the theme for the weekend. What started out as the Mid-Tenn Gathering seems to have been more aptly named Rain or Shine in what was a fun-filled weekend of riding & festivities!
The weekend went rather well, with only a few mishaps, one lost chain and a couple of flat tires. Luckily all the mishaps were able to be fixed up, and thus, we were able to all finish the Saturday ride. With a total of 15 bikes & 19 attendees, it seemed to be a successful first year event!
This year may have been the first, but certainly won’t be the last. Rain or 'Shine, we’ll do it again next year! Everyone’s thoughts, comments, and pictures can be found here.
