So why should the Denver folks get all the fun?

Lets meet some weekend soon. Weather has been great as of late and looks like it will extend through next weekend. Long ride, short ride, super slab, one of our many streets named peach tree – or no ride at all.

Who is in? What works for you?

I believe we have all of the cabins at Caney Creek (http://www.caneycreekvillage.com/) booked. Some of us are going up on Thursday, most on Friday.

Thanks for the info Karl. It is a bit late for me to act on. I have a delicate balance between work and school.

That being said - anyone up for short group ride around Atlanta, perhaps on another weekend?

Id be interested if ya'll rode up in the mountains...not city trips for me! And if it was in 2-3 weeks or so. I just did a 461 mile ride today. That was nice...took all of 10 hours! :smug: This coming up weekend is a 8hr scenario paintball game on saturday, and a day at the lake on sunday. So no good there, but id be willing to go some weekend after that!

I'm sorta leaning that way too.

Julia will be visiting her sister north of Boston October 7-11, so the following weeking probably isn't good.

Maybe the 22-23 for a night at TWO?

Hotfix, I'm ALWAYS up for a ride. Anywhere. I usually go to the NGa mountains on the weekends, but some relaxing local stuff would be nice too. I've been wanting to head to the northside and sit on a few "euro-trash" bikes. Or find a few new good resturants, whatever.
PM me if yall get something going, as I'm not always good about checking the forum.

route could depend on distance/time/experiance...or how many states you want to hit...i did 3 over the course of 461 miles last saturday.
List of Good Roads:
129 (Blood MTN)
180 - Tight between 60 & 129. Sweepers From 129 - 75
Ga 60 Morganton - Dahlanaga
GA 75 North of Helen to 180.
Richard B. Russel Scenic Hiway
Assorted Roads Thru Unicoi up to 76
Also have Warwoman road out of Clayton...makes a good loop up to Highlands NC.
Feeling Energetic...Always Have Cherohala Skyway...Wayah Road...among others thru TENN and NC. (Although i just went to the Cherohala Last weekend...i might would go if we rode from Robbinsville - Tellico Plains, i always seem to do it the other way!)
I can make a pretty good loop out of helen up towards north carolina, then back down catching 129/180/60 coming back into dahlanaga.
Just spitting out ideas...i dont even know if i can make it, depends on when i get my new shoes for my bike! :)

At the corner of US 129 and 19. Follow Ga 60 out of Dahlonega then take the right fork at the wierd triangle. That is where Ga 60 & 19 Split up. Follow 19 Till it ends right accross a bridge. Restruant will be on the corner (Hints Turner's Corner) on the right coming from that way. That is if im thinking of the right restruant.

Thanks for the map Calabash. I really don't know GA that well outside of the city.
Blue Ridge is only 1.5 hours straight up 75, 575, and state routes from Atlanta. Turners Corner is also about 1.5 hours up 400, 19.
It will be the furthest out of Atlanta I have been on the bike, but I looks like a straight shot. I have been riding enough to give it a shot and I think my Savage is up to it. I can come up either day (22 or 23)

Helen, GA would only be another 30 minutes after Turners Corner :)

You could also go down south to Pine Mountain. It's a little more sedate as far as the riding goes. TWO has some great roads, but there are some really crooked ones, there, too.

John,

Do you use Mapsource? If so, you can put KarlL's coordinates in there and it will show you exactly where it is.

It's just like KarlL to know the exact coordinates of everywhere he goes.

Karl_L
10-03-2005, 03:36 PM
It's the intersection of US 19 and US 129 in, ready for it..... Turner's Corner, GA. About 10 miles from Dahlonega. As far as I can tell the town is the resteraunt and the resteraunt is the town.

The coords above were copied right out of my MapSource waypoint. You can create a waypoint in MapSource, just create a new one anywhere on the map then open it for editing. Paste the coords above into the field.

Yep, kinda like the CrossRoads of Time at the Gap.

BTW, any way to get a head count of who's definately going to be coming? It's about a four hour haul for me to get there, so I'll be making it a two day trip if I can come. I'll be there this weekend with the FBR's (and likely taking the Deal's Gap/Cherohala loop on Saturday, which is about 400 miles if anyone's in the area and wants to hook up). I don't mind the haul, but I don't want to shoot a whole weekend for a busted meet.

What kind of pace/distances are you all wanting to be running? I'm comfortable up into the 400-500 mile day range (like the Gap/Skyway Loop trip from there) and with running a fairly spirited pace to a basic limit +5. I'm just considering which bike I'd like to take up, as I need to do some maintenance on my primary after this weekend, and I won't have much time to do it. If you guys are wanting to scream at 80 mph on the Skyway (Larry, Mr. 10k, I'm looking at you!), I may have to get creative with the plastics, stand, and plates! ;-) If it's a more sedate ride that's planned, I'll probably just wheel up with the Magna.

HotFix
10-04-2005, 04:32 PM
You may want to roll up on the Magna. I don't plan on pushing it much on my Savage.

We can do a lead/sweep set-up. That way everyone can run at their own comfort level.
Sweep makes sure noone gets left behind. Lead stops and waits on the whole group at turn offs. With agreed upon stops along the route this system works well with mixed skill levels and or bike types.

HotFix
10-05-2005, 04:32 PM
yeah - I'll be among the sweepers :)

Here is my approximation for the Atlanta folks. 175mi round trip. Helen is only 17mi from Turners Corner and it is Octoberfest ;)

kwr8728
10-05-2005, 04:50 PM
Hotfix you are going to only do 175? Hmm we need to work on you a little!!! Hehehe.
Alternative to taking 20 (which just sucks cause of traffic) all the way accross is to take 369N from 20 to either hwy 9 or 400. I prefer 9 because it isnt four lane. another option for us is to go on up 575 till we get to 108. GO right and follow 53 over to dawsonville and pick up hwy 9 somewhere over that way. Looks like we get to really break you in to the good stuff!!! Lets see if we cant get 129, 180 among others into this little outing! Although may skip 180 if some dont like that tight of a road.
But deffinately aggreed on the sweep/lead idea. We use it mountain biking and it works great in the woods. Oh yea. Ill will have my video camera mounted up for this trip...so ya'll better be on ya'lls best behavior!!!!!!! ;)

Ugh this sucks...might not be able to ride with ya'll this weekend. Someone backed into my bike last night, right after my friend and i got off of it. Needless to say, front fender is broke, rt side fairing is scuffed a little and pushed back about .5", Scratched rt side mirror, scratched/chipped brake pedal, scratched/chipped rt pass. foot peg, scratched rt bar end. that stuff replaced is going to cost someone (not me) over 800. And then we get to the Steering. UGH, hopefully everything is just rotated and nothing is actually bent. But the steering lock to the left has been pushed back. No telling how long this will take! Ill post pics sometime...maybe! Hotfix, might want to find someone else to go up with, as i dont know how long it is going to take the insurance to get on the ball!
