Here's a reminder pic of what we're looking at with some of the great riding up there.

Here's a couple of other links: http://www.talimenascenicdrive.com/

We'll do this trip the weekend of June 11 & 12. It is definitely a weekend trip.

We will be staying at the Sun Country Inn in Mena. http://www.suncountryinn.com/

We will be meeting at Central Yamaha in Plano at 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning with plans to leave by 7:00 a.m. It's approximately 4 1/2 hours to Mena just in time for lunch. We'll rest a bit, and hit the parkway that afternoon. After an awesome afternoon of riding, pictures and scenery we'll have dinner at the Chopping Block. http://www.menachoppingblock.com/index.html (http://) Looks good! We've never eaten there (I don't know why), but I've seen lot's of cars in front of it.

We will leave Sunday morning after breakfast at the Queen Wilhemena Lodge on the Parkway. http://www.queenwilhelmina.com/images/mainpage/qw_main_bigphoto_01.jpg

Here's the list of confirmed riders:

Stoked (Randy)
Mer (Marianne)
Southernspirit (Kathy)
Theo and Candy(friends of Kathy)
Maxiscoot (Karen)
Sabrescott (Scott)
El Guapo (Issac)
Harvey (Glen)
Feejer

Here's are our routes. The first one is the route to Mena. It usually takes 4 1/2 hours to get there. It's a nice route we've done a few times. Although beware, we were "attacked" by some killer Yorkies coming into Mena. lol (Disregard the little "jog" I did on #8, I didn't know how to get it off the map, we won't be doing that...lol)

The route home will take us back across the parkway (yea) and then past a beautiful lake and dam. It is very scenic for sure. We will end up taking I75 home the last part.

Mer,

We were thinking of going earlier in the spring, but I know a bunch of you wanted to go after April. If we are able go in June, my vote would be for the second weekend, June 11. We are planning on going to the HondaHoot in Knoxville the last weekend of June.

right now, any weekend in June works for me. But if we want to firm the date up to June 11, that's cool.

If you can go, your more than welcome to ride to Mena with me. I'm in Bryant just on the outskirts of Little Rock. I have ridden to Mena a few times and have a nice little route from here. It's about a 2 hour ride from my house. Just let me know. Worth the trip for sure!

Alright Peter, let's plan on going. You need to figure out fun routes there and back and the journey can't take more than 10 days round trip. This can be the 1st Annual SoCal/Tx meet. Next year, the Texans can come to California. What do you say Texas bikers, are we invited?http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/crazy/252.gif

heh heh, yeah, I'd love to take a ride out to So Cal. Matter of fact, it is farther for me to ride from my house to El Paso than it is to ride from El Paso to So Cal. Texas is just too frickkin' big sometimes!

Hey Mer, concerning the dates, how is that going to work? Are the TX folk going to need meet in Dallas, and then on the 11th we roll up there, and come back on the 12th? I'm just curious how it is going to work to know if I'm gonna have to make it a 4 day weekend (one day up to Dallas, one day to head up there and ride it and spend the night, one day to come back down to Dallas, and one day to go back home).

We'll meet up with the Arkie riders then. Eat lunch and rest a bit and then ride the parkway that afternoon. Sunday, have breakfast and head out after that. Our route home will take us on the parkway once again. Oh yea! :biker: Probably be home (Plano) late afternoon or so.

It's about 224 miles from where we are in Missouri to Mena, AR. Need to think this one over...Looks like we'd have to take a four day minimum and I'm not sure my vacation time will stand up to it, but I'm going to check it out-

Just checked with H and count us in- we can travel down on Saturday to meet up and ride back Sunday without having to take extra time off work-

Hopefully by then we'll have enough dry weather that I'll be used to riding again- it's been pretty lean this last couple of months!

Has anyone made reservations yet- Do we need to do that now or wait a while longer?

Stay safe-

Excellent!! Yea...we will be traveling about that far on Saturday too. We'll take a good break before we hit the parkway.

I haven't booked anything yet, but I will probably do so tommorrow. You can probably wait, but it doesn't hurt to go ahead and reserve a room. I'll be booking at the Sun Country Inn in Mena(see the very first post for the link)

Think I need to write that on my forehead!

We're a definite- I've got quite a few classes this spring but have managed to avoid that weekend and I think I'm through scheduling- H shouldn't have any problems with his work, but if he does I'll have to snag someone else to go with me and just go anyhow!

Hey Teri- where are ya! Maybe we can get you to my place on Friday and you and H can ride with us-

Now don't you guys laugh at me for being slow on the twisties!! ;-)

I'll be in the slower group for sure. (don't want to go flying off the mountain....lol) Besides...it's hard to see all the beauty if your going at breakneck speed. lmao. Would love to have you Teri and your H too!!

This is really a road to enjoy at a sane, sensible pace. There is such beautiful country on your left and your right that it's hard to keep your focus in front of you.

Besides, if you aren't careful, you will come smoking out of a corner only to find that an gigantic RV is pulling out in front of you from a scenic overlook.

Well as you know there is not a big choice of restaurants in Mena (other than some fast food), but the Lodge (on the mountain) has an outstanding breakfast buffet and the Skyline Cafe it a great place for local "flavor" (although it's only open for breakfast and lunch). There is also a pretty good pizza place near the hotel with a game room. Air hockey or pool anyone? There is another local restaurant that I saw last time we were there that had quite a few cars in front of it. I thought we'd check that out for dinner on Saturday. It might be the Branding Iron BBQ and Steak House. I can't remember the name, but I do know where it is. We definitely know where NOT to eat. lol

I am 100% totally down with this trip. I am poised to make a reservation, but I don't know where to stay.

So, where IS everyone staying on the Saturday of the ride? I've heard that Sun Country place tossed around--is anyone staying at the Lodge? I ask because I'd to stay where most of us will be, and if I end up in a somewhat shoddy place I don't want to suffer alone this time. :)

Scott,

We'll probably meet at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday and be on the road at 7:00 a.m. We'll meet at the Yamaha Shop (Central Yamaha) on Hwy 5 just north of Legacy. Here are a couple of rough maps. They may change, although probably not alot.
http://texasbreeze.com/photo/albums/userpics/10001/image_map%7E0.JPG
This is the direct route to Mena. It usually takes 4 1/2 hours to get there. It's a nice route we've done a few times. Although beware, we were "attacked" by some killer Yorkies coming into Mena. lol (Disregard the little "jog" I did on #8, I didn't know how to get it off the map, we won't be doing that...lol)

http://texasbreeze.com/photo/albums/userpics/10001/image_map.JPG
The route home will take us back across the parkway (yea) and then past a beautiful lake and dam. It is very scenic for sure. We will end up taking I75 home the last part.

Sorry these maps aren't better, it took me a long time to even figure how to post it here. lol.

Mer, your start point on the first map is a ways north of Central Yamaha--I take it that map isn't exact? Looks like a fun route though, the 121 to Bonham is always a pleasant Saturday morning ride. Beyond that, though, I will be venturing into the Unknown and will thusly need your mad nav skills. See you there!

Yea, it's not exact. I was just putting the map up as a reference, a general overview if you will. Randy has the exact route on his GPS software. I couldn't figure out how to put a copy of that up here so I "attempted" to copy the route on Streets and Maps. It is a nice route.

I'm about to leave work and go test ride a '05 V Star 1100 Classic. If it likes me and I like it, I may be bringing home a new baby.

I'm sure going to miss my Pegusus. He's been very good to me.

Well y'all...looks like a great route, but I'd be missing a weekend of softball playoffs to make the trip. I'm still a maybe -- depends on whether or not my coach continues to frustrate the absolute bejesus out of us.

And so it starts -- the time of year when my sports vie against each other for attention!

Oh, I'm still considering it. We've got four weekends of two different playoffs. There are two weekends of league playoffs, which determine our final standings. Then there are the playoffs to determine which team(s) from each division will attend the World Series tourney sponsored by the national governing body of our league. So, I'd only miss one weekend of playoffs for standings. Hmm...I COULD be talked into doing that. Hills, you say...?

Mer,
Thanks for the map. Looking forward to it. Finally getting to meet all you guys face to face.

By the way, the white VStar Classic 1100 is now Karen's. It was a real blast watching her pop the clutch at every stop on the way home. I remember that very well. We took it out for about 100 mile ride the next day and by the time we got home she was shifting like a pro. She loves it. I'm glad. Last bike purchase for a loooooooong time! $$$$ I'm just a banjo player!
See you guys in a few weeks.

Alright...so I've reread things, and before I can make a final decision...I need to know the travel plans of the other Houston riders. Getting to Talamena is no problem. It's a two-day, two-stage trip. The trip home will involve either 9-10 hours in the saddle or a second overnight in Plano and the final stage home on Monday. What are your plans?

Yep, thats what Im figuring too. 2 days to Tali (Stop off in Plano and ride up with that bunch) and then 2 days back (Stop off in Plano and drop that bunch off)...

My only issue is lodging for 4 days. Ouch.

Yeah...there is that. I hadn't even thought about the extra expense. I also need to find out if I can get the days off AND now there's a possibility I might be sent out of town on business. I didn't get many details and the project manager simply asked if I was available to go out of town "the week of June 10." If it's just to spec out a project, I don't think it would take ALL week, so if I go there's the possibility of being back in town (and ready to ride) before then. Ah, gotta love bein' a consultant!

Hi Folks-

Jerry and I are going to back out- after a lot of discussion, it basically comes down to selling the Aero and buying another maxi-scoot if I want to do long trips this year or keeping my bike and waiting until things work out and going for it next year.

I'm sorry- I was REALLY looking forward to meeting everyone. Just doesn't seem to be 'in the cards' right now.

We do have a room reserved- I'm going to wait until Sunday to cancel it in case any 'late joiners' need a reservation at the hotel- So let me know if you're having problems getting a spot and you can take ours.

Stay safe and have fun-

It'll work out- We've looked at the scoots but I don't want two bike payments and I don't want to give up my bike unless the arm/hand thing doesn't improve. We have several ideas in the works and I really want to give it a chance to clear up and keep my bike before I make a decision I'll regret later.

Hopefully next year- maybe even by this fall!

Great pics, Mer! I can't wait. Quick question, do you think there will be much temperature difference up in the higher parts of the route? Will it still be 90-something up there? Should I pack the non-mesh jacket, or will a liner under the mesh be fine? Will I need the liner at all? Okay, I asked almost the same question in a variety of formats.

Mer
05-26-2005, 05:11 PM
It is a little cooler up on the Parkway, but with the heat of the day (80's right now) I think I'm going to wear mesh and bring a liner/long sleeve t, or sweatshirt. Looks like it's in the 60's in the evening, although by the time the sun goes down, we'll be off the mountains. It's always a tricky question. LOL. Did I answer any/all of your question. lol

I will. I talked to Onebxr via PM a few weeks ago, and he expressed an interest in getting together for dinner, so I'll PM him and maybe we can all set something up. I'm sure you and Randy know some good places to eat that aren't too far away (I don't really feel much like riding around in that unfamiliar Dallas interstate traffic). Just name the place (with address, if possible) and the time and I'll definitely be there, and I'll let Onebxr know where we're going. Anybody else wanna join? Harvey? Maxi and Sabrescott? Feejer? Anyone else in the Dallas area?

And sorry to hear you Houston folks can't make it, especially you, Ken. That just sucks, man. I hope you get to feeling better soon. Don't get addicted to those painkillers, alright? We'll be taking some twisties at a hair-on-fire furious pace just for you. Er...well...maybe not, but we'll at least try to get some good BBQ in your honor! Do they have decent BBQ up there, Mer?

It's true... D/FW has a ridiculous number of restaurants. I know some good places, but Friday night sucks if you want a table for a sizable group at any of them. Denny's for dinner, great! What time?

As for Clark's, honestly, Mer, I was planning on leaving rather early on Friday to beat the heat and was planning on trying to arrive close to lunchtime. If you and Randy are up for it, maybe we could try a lunch run to Clark's? I don't know if Randy will be working during the day and such, but it is just a thought (I sense he'll suddenly get "ill" just before lunch and have to go home :D). It'll take me about 3 hours to get there, I'm guessing, so I should be okay to ride some more. I can ride about 5-6 hours before really having to rest. But I just know I'm gonna need a nap before dinner, though, to get out of the heat.

Man, I can't wait!

Meeting Denny's in Plano, on Friday, the 10th.

So we've got the place, now we need a time. How does, um, say, 7:30 sound to everyone?

and Mer- Alright!! I'll get the chance to try that tasty BBQ and those nice twisties again!

Wow, it's like you know exactly how rush hour works here. That time sounds good.

And don't worry about not being able to find Central Yamaha. It's on a big road with few buildings around and a big sign out front, it's hard to miss. Map. (http://www.centralyamaha.com/map_hours.asp?sid=08785364X6K3K2005J11I35I17JAMQ52 4R0) Legacy Drive has its own exit on 75, so you just exit there and go east, make a left on Avenue K, bear right, and it'll be right there on your right.

Hey Mer, I spoke to Richard, (Onebxr) on Friday and he said he was probably going to be able to make the dinner, and if he doesn't get rained out this week at school for the practices that he might be able to make the run to Clark's. He said if everything went well he would be leaving work at 12:30, so maybe, if it is okay with you and Randy, could we push the meet time back? I'll give him a call on Thursday to see where he stands.

No prob. The later time would probably work better for Randy too. Let me know the time....we're flexible. :wiggleit:

I called Sun Country Inn, and my reservation is still good.

I've found both sets of tools, the tire patch kit (tubeless), and other bike related gear.

I still need to change the oil and filter! I might wind up doing that late Friday evening, rather than going to Denny's.

Otherwise, I'm ready to go.

The weather is looking GREAT! (hope I didn't jinx it....lol) Kathy's friends may not be going. Theo's bike stopped running the other day and he can't get it into a shop until NEXT WEEK! He's calling around to a few other Harley places (Hot Springs) but it's not looking good. Cross your fingers for them.

I CAN'T wait!!!!!

With Theo and Candy likely missing it due to bike woes?

No, don't say that! There's still a chance they'll be able to have it fixed by Saturday if they find a dealer who can nick the problem by then. Sounds impossible, but all you gotta do is believe... I've gotten similarly lucky before myself.

That's the list. Everyone is riding with us from Plano except for Kathy who will meet us there. (she's from Arkansas)

Theo thinks it is some kind of electrical problem. They were out riding last weekend (luckily close to home) when the bike just died. They checked all the fuses and a bunch of other stuff and still couldn't fix it. Sad thing is that Candy was REALLY excited about going (riding pillion). Theo had even gotten her some new riding gear. Well, we're keeping our fingers crossed.

Well, I too will keep my fingers crossed for them. Hope they can make it.

I'm assuming they were riding in dry weather, i.e. we aren't dealing with water induced electrical problems.

I hope Kathy's friends can make it, too.

Hey Mer, I've got everything lined up, so, provided everything goes according to plan then I'll be at Central Yamaha at 1pm tomorrow. Is meeting at 1 okay with you and Randy? I spoke to Richard this morning and he said he'd be there. Can't wait to see you all again!

I can't believe I am here while they are there. I am now consoling myself with the knowledge that, since my company decided to suddenly send me to Michigan this Sunday, I would have had to cancel anyway. What IS it with Texas rides taking place while I'm out of town on business?
