View Full Version : $250 Curvy Sign Contest

We've been using the same banner pic for 5 years now. And it's great. I think it was MikeInSLC that let us use that one and it's done well. It's on our business cards, the same font is on our stickers, etc etc.

Well, it's time to mix it up! I want to make a variety of BBO home images, but the key is that I want the curvy sign involved in it. I saw a variety of opportunities out in TN this weekend for such a picture, so I know they are out there.

So, here's the contest;

I want pictures of your bike, a road, and the curvy sign in a similar context to our header image, and then the best will be voted on by our members. The one with the best votes...wins!

As a refresher, this is our home image:
http://www.beginnerbikers.org/forum/images/headlogo.jpg
Note, it has a road, it has a curvy sign, and it has a bike.

Prize is a $250 NE Gift Certificate. They don't expire, so if you don't need something this moment, you can hang onto it until later.

Contestants can email their submissions to derick@beginnerbikers.org, and allows beginnerbikers.org to reproduce their picture as deemed necessary. It will be used for promotional purposes only.

I think that does it, if you have questions, ask...but I know we're going to get some great photos.

Contest ends: 8/31 - should give you plenty of time in riding season to snap some pics.

The positive side: PA sticks that sign in front of any old mild curve in the road. Should be easy to find a bunch.

The negative side: None of them are going to be nearly as spectacular as the CO shot that, sadly, lacks a sign.

Hey asp? How about I harvest one of PA's spares and mail it out to you? Then you can stick it in the ground there and get the shot. Teamwork. Split the winnings with you (if I don't get arrested for stealing a road sign).

It may have been referring to the rutted dirt road just off to the right, going down to that Christmas tree field. You are all right, it wasn't much of a curve really. I took it at about 65 without really noticing a curve.

It's on Owltown Rd, a couple miles south of Blairsville, off of 129. Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=+34%C2%B049%2712.82%22N++83%C2%B055%2723.20%22W&ie=UTF8&ll=34.820251,-83.923101&spn=0.009019,0.020986&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A)

I did take the picture myself, everyone else made other plans so I was all alone. Just as an aside, I noticed today that most of the curve ahead signs I saw were tilted one way or the other.

You know, I went all over looking for a curvy sign today. It's hard to spot them when all you're doing is looking for the apex and braking zones, and watching out for gravel and cops. I did find a curvy road though. This was a section of high speed sweepers just after a place called "horsepower hill" over the other side. It's called horsepower hill for a reason, it's where liter bikes walk away from 600s.

http://2kcrew.lunarpages.com/Deckers/images/photo0019.jpg
I think there was a posted 50mph sign a ways back, I'm not sure at that speed, it was a blur.

Ok there were a couple of 15mph U-turn corners with signs, but no place to pull off; just guard rail and a 50ft drop to the river.

I know. I was "driving" 550 between Purg and Silverton yesterday at work. Granted, I didn't make it all the way up, but for the 10 miles or so that I looked at, the best curves had no signs, or the signs were placed so far in advance of the curve that you couldn't get a pic of both the sign AND the curvy part of the road. It'd be a pic of a sign with just a short chunk of straight road that disappears around a corner.

Well.. at light speed we need those signs placed WELL in advance to prevent dropping off the face of the earth or slamming into a rock wall... DUUHHH..... ;)

The best sign I have encountered isn't a road sign, but marking some expert extreme terrain at Park City (or was it Deer Valley, Todd?). It was a skull and crossbones with something like "Beyond this point, you could die".

This is going to be harder than I thought... there are no shoulders on my roads around here to pull off and take pictures. There were some driveways but the angle of the road slanted for run off but made it almost impossible to get the kickstand down, making the bike stand upright and unstable. I thought about just stopping in the road get off real quick and take a picture but thought better of it, didn't want to be a statistic. I'll wait and get behind someone and take a pic of them as we ride by the sign, I was practicing my timing of when to take the pic yesterday.

I want pictures of your bike, a road, and the curvy sign in a similar context to our header image

Note, it has a road, it has a curvy sign, and it has a bike

Also note everyone...addition of pictures to this thread, are not considered submissions. Please remember to email your photos to derick@beginnerbikers.org

Well, if having a beginner bike in the pic is a requirement, I guess I can't play because my beginner bike just left with it's new owner....

What? Cropping? Like this?
http://www.jim-n-mandie.com/blog/uploaded_images/Untitled-1-788761.jpg

Sidenote: there's another one of those 'double curve' signs on the other side of the road, and they're both twice the size of normal ones (read:HUGE). I need to drive back over there and get a shot of the "Motorcyclists look out ahead" sign.

Nope no tickets.. Well not on the BRP anyway.. Other websites are saying around $500 for a ticket.. and others are saying a week in jail.

Basically you can do 50MPH with no problems..

I've passed BRP ranger speed traps at close to 10 over and they didn't stop me. I am sure tickets up there are expensive, but there is a lot of internet-legend with BRP tickets. I know a few riders that have been pulled over, and did not receive tickets.

But if you get stung by an extraordinary ticket on the BRP, then my name is Dewayne Henson.

I call shenanigans. We all know that road doesn't exist in Iowa. You just stole the sign from somewhere else and propped it up there for the photo. That entry should be disqualified and all photos from Indiana get +50 points.
