View Full Version : Disaster Recovery Test tomorrow

Starting tomorrow AM, and lasting for the day, I will be moving BBO over to its backup server which resides at my house. I will put a banner up at the top so you know where you are, and it will be a snapshot of the current database. I will not carry the db back over to the main site, so keep in mind, what you post, will be discarded in the end. I'll also have a URL to the main site as it is, but beginnerbikers.org will direct to the backup server.

If you dont want to be involved, you'll be able to go to prod.beginnerbikers.org and everything should be a-OK.

Not quite clear on the meaning here, not tech inclined. Does that mean that, as of Friday, our posts from Thursday will be caput?

Correct, if you go to beginnerbikers.org.

If you go to the other url there, prod.beginnerbikers.org, that will point to this server right here, and your posts will remain.

We just want to test server load handling and a variety of other variables to cover us in case of another hacking.

Dammit, Jim! That means all the blather I posted yesterday is permanently part of the database!

Is the backup server named K.I.T.T.? Or is it K.A.R.R.?

That blather was going to be a permanent part of the database anyway....it's the blather that you're going to post today that wasn't supposed to be permanent, but now is....

You're all a bunch of nerds.

...he said while surreptitiously rolling for initiative and simultaneously checking to verify his save vs. breath weapons.

Now, is this on a d20 based or a standardized d10?

stoorat

Initiative and saving throws are rolled on a d20, but I'm pretty sure he's a barbarian, specifically so he could make use of that crystal d12 he bought at the Renne Faire in 7th grade.

Somehow ... I don't think we're on the Starship Enterprise any longer...

Or this could be a Shadowrun game.

This is a go for tomorrow, everything is nearly ready..

Again, this is really to test the backup server in an event of the site being down....I would like the same level of traffic, and if it bombs, I'll switch it back.

Pretty much... :)

Again, I will have a link to the actual production site, so you can still post permanent messages.

Cool!

I can throw warnings around like candy at a fourth of July parade tomorrow and they'll disappear the next day! ;)

Do bans disappear in a similar fashion? You could really go mad.

Would it be possible to lable the links? Like [link] <----posts here will be gone tomorrow" [link] <----posts here will remain for us to laugh at for all eternity

Sorry if that's a hassle--people like me get confused easily.

Testing is complete, and was successful. There were a few tweaks to be had in the links but that's really about it. I'm really glad it was as productive and successful as it was. We now have the tools and capabilities to run the site if our main server goes down for any period of time, or we are hacked again. It may be a little slow due to the pipe to my house but it's manageable. I know that 3 weeks of cleaning up the BS after the hacking was a trial on everyone involved - this will hopefully keep us ahead of the game.

Boy am I glad that is over! I would really miss you folks if it went any longer!

So, are we real? Is this memorex? Is this permanent? Just temporary?

I mean, there are things I want to say .. some of which I may want to not be permanent if you know what I mean ... but some things I want to stay around ... some not ...

OOh, look, a pretty flower ...

We are running on the REAL, PERMANENT server again. The BBO Backup server had a big blinking banner signifying it.
