Well, since we had a break in the weather and the sun was out, and the temp were to hit the low 80's, Todd and I decided to do a ride together. Same ride I had done the weekend before so another good workout for me.

The setup: Me with my new fancy Scorpion helmet on the VN750 with the perfectly sized windshield. Todd, with his great new Volusia sans a windshield (foreshadowing obviously). The ride is to start from SLC, head ip I-80 to East Canyon, take that up and over and around the lake, then head toward Morgan UT. From tehre we'll head northwest toward Snowbasin ski resort, then over east to Huntsville and up Hwy 36 toward evanston. We'll do this as an out and back, so at some point turning around and coming home the same route.

Sunday morning ... it's cool, about 60. So I just have a long sleeve t-shirt on under my JR Atomic jacket with the vents closed. Todd has some kewl fancy insulated thingy under his JR Mesh jacket. We meet at McD's for a quick snack and off we go. Mind you, SLC will be the lower point in this trip. Everything else will be in the upper elevations. We cruise up I-80 no problem with me in the lead. Then we head toward East Canyon where the real fun begins. Two lane road with some great switchbacks, S-turns, and tight sweepers on both the uphill and downhill side. Only real annoying aspect is that on the tight switchbacks on the uphill side, there's still gravel in the lane .... have to take them slower than I'd like, but oh well. Up we go ... and where's Todd? Slow down ... putt putt putt ... okay, there he is. Over the crest and down we go. Turn, LEAN in the curves. SLOW coming into them, use some throttle through them. Shift the weight ... ah, slowly getting this. Down toward the bottom now and ... where's Todd? Pull over and wait ... ah, there's Todd, okay, he's there, just going slow. Good man. Second year, new bike, he's taking things very conservative, smart boy.

Along we go, around the lake, through the fun curves and twisties ... again losing Todd, but I wait for him now and then ... and into Morgan we get. ya know ... it'd damn chilly out !!! This long sleeve t-shirt isn't cutting it under the jacket. So, when we get to the bottom of the hill to head towards Snowbasin I pull into a gas station so I can add layers. BRRRRR. Todd is as layered as he can get so ... Then it's off we go, up to Snow basin and into snowbasin. The road in and through snowbasin is fun and twisty. I handle it fine, wondering every now and then just how much faster Mike and his SB'ers would have taken it. LOL Once again I lose Todd in the curves so I park and wait for him at the bottom. In time he shows up and we're off. In Huntsville I gas up so that I can make sure I can get over the next pass and back with no problems. I already have 88 miles to this point and my range is typically between 135 and 160 miles before I hit reserve, depending on how my mileage is going. Todd boasts at this point about his 4.5 gallon gas tank ... bite me Todd! :-)

Off we go, heading east now up the mountain toward Evanston. Bugs, oh yes, there are bugs, and big juicy ones. I got it several times on the face shield and my windshield is getting peppered. Poor Todd, back there riding naked ... Up high we have snow on teh ground still, LOTS of snow. The road is clear, but at one point we had a cut through that was 7' or more of snow !! Pics to come on that one. The ride along the top was damn chilly as there was still plenty of snow, and wind to go along with it. Wind, snow, 50-60mph ... makes for some cold riding! Fun time through the turns though, really working them, shifting weight, looking THROUGH the turn, leaning, fun. Down we go, thankfully finding some warmth. Pass a cop on the way down, he's going up,so we wave to him. ALWAYS wave to cops I think. Better to stay on their good side. Once we're down in the flats, I find a nice wide area for us to u-turn and take a quick break. Now it's Todd's turn to lead.

Next Post ... Todd's turn.

The ride continues ... Todd leads.

So, on the way back I have Todd take the lead. This way I can just sit back and relax, enjoy the ride without having to watch for Todd. He'll be in front of me. Up we go now, Todd looking MUCH more confident now. Good pace he sets. We again wave at the cop who is now coming down the hill. LOL Up top it's damn cold again and we seem to have found a head wind. Lovely. We pass a group of Harley's, maybe 8 or so, who are, of course, not in any gear except maybe a leather vest. BRRRRR, they had to be damned cold coming up over the top. I know I was chilled and I had layers on and a jacket. Friendly riders though. Down we start, Todd cruising nicely through the curves. I take note of this, where he was a bit tentative on the way out, he's riding much more confident now. Good pace, fun pace, we ride in unison well. About a third of the way down we hit El Schmucko !! Van driver with a CA license plate. Won't pull over so we can pass, slows down in EVERY curve but then speeds WAY Up once he's out of them. Great, so much for riding our ride, but it's okay. Then I start to see that Todd wants to pass El Schmucko, okay, I can accept that. Except that every time Todd starts his approach, El Schmucko speeds up !! I don't mean a little, I mean a lot, so we can't pass him. GRRRRR, dammit. What a Schmuck. It's not like we were riding his butt or anything, or flashing our lights at him. Finally we hit a long straightaway and Todd passes him. I too begin my move, and roll on, and roll on. The VN750 will fly when you roll on, but I had to do 75 mph to pass this idiot that's how much he sped up from the time Todd started his run. For whatever reason he did not want us to pass him. Well we finally did and shortly left him behind us. Schmuck.

After a few minutes I see Todd suddenly do this head duck kind of thing and I wonder what he's doing, then I see it ... a Swarm. LOL Todd took the brunt of the first attack of the Swarm, whereas for me and my windshield, it took out attack wave #2. My face shield only got a couple hits. Ride naked all you want, I like my shield, thank ya very much! :-)

We re-gas up as I now have about 76 miles on the tank and will have anohter 70-80 to get home. I can probably do it, but a break would be good and I'd rather have gas to spare while riding. We half expect El Schmucko to enter the gas station and yell at us but we never see him. We also take off layers of clothes. Whereas it was cold in the morning, the heat has definitely arrived now !!! Back on the road we go. As we approach Snowbasin again Todd takes us up and over the highway section this time, which is fine. This is a 55mph twisty section that is great practice for high speed turning. Again, Todd has a good pace and we're riding really well together.

Over to East Canyon we travel now and begin the upward treck. Todd's pace is much faster than the way out and he's looking good in the turns. I lay back to about 4 seconds so we don't get too close, but it's still a good pace to ride. I enter the section I freaked out a little last time on (target fixation, bad line, entry speed too high, panic) and handle it much better this time, no doubt to the slower entry speed all around. Good lean though, good weight shift. We make it up and over EC with no problems and pull over to decide what is next. Heading home seems to be the best opion so we head back down I-80 to our respective destinations.

Homeward bound now we hit the stiff headwinds projected for the day. 75 mph down a sweeping mountain interstate with a friggin headwind is oh such fun. Add in buffeting from 18-wheelers and you get the idea. With my shield on I'm able, I think, to take it a little faster and easier than Todd, who had to take the brunt of all of it. Once in teh SLC valley I head my way and team up with a guy on a Beemer. Nice bike, whatever it was. Red. LOL All in all a great ride.

Ride Time, about 5 hours give or take.
Mileage: 236 for me
Fuel Mileage: 58, 57,and 54 mpg respectively.

Animals seen/dodged: cows grazing next to road, sheep grazing next to road, Deer about to dart in front of me, thankfully does not. Bird dive bombs Todd, plenty of little varmits running across the road.

Great ride. Great, great, great ride. I was starting to feel the curves in East Canyon, and really got into it out on hgwy 36. There were a couple curves where I had to gentle up on my gas so I didn't get uncomfortably close to Clair.

I get it now. I understand why all the sporty bikers go for the twisties. It's not looking over your handlebars on the curve, it's leaning up on one buttcheek, tipping your shoulder out to the side and commiting to the turn.

When you're out there in the turn, and you're looking through it, you can't see the handlebars or the bike at all. It's just you and the road, and it feels like flying. It's awesome. Todd want more.

In other news, that Van guy had me pissed. Clair failed to mention that when I passed him through the advantage of my superior acceleration, I threw up the official symbol for "I am displeased with your performance on the road today."

Once, I could have excused as him not paying attention, but it became rapidly apparent that he was trying to prevent us from passing. Clair couldn't hear it of course, but on a couple such occasions I was roaring with anger in my helmet.

TODD SMASH CAGERS! MRAAAAAAAAWWWRRRR!!!

Not very if at all...to much locals complaining and hence the friendly Sheriff's Deputies handing out performance awards.

There have actually been cases of either locals or hikers throwing rocks at motorcycles on that road. At least one resulting crash that I know of. Saw a group of 15 at least sportbikes screaming past us up Trapper's Loop as we were chewing the fat at the Mtn Green Sinclair before heading that way ourselves. Saw them again screaming over Monte a bit later. Saw either the same group or another along the side of East Canyon just on the Morgan Co side of Big Mtn. Pass...not a normal place for a rest stop...crash maybe? Wouldn't be surprised...not an uncommon occurance from what I understand. Needless to say ( I hope) that I don't ride with those guys, and while I appreciate them laying out a "cop screen," they end up drawing more unfortunate attention for all riders. Sorry to threadjack, but a mini rant was in order :).

Sounds like you had a great ride....we probably just missed you along the way somewhere....Next time you're out that way over Monte, turn left at the end of the road and head up to Randolph for some Gator Burgers and a Raspberry shake :).

Sounds like a fun ride, but a little cold, at least in parts. I don't mind the cold so much as my wife does.

Bugs are a messy pain, which is one of the many reasons I wear a full face helmet (though no windshield). How people ride half helmets and no windshield is beyond me.

Here, here. The first time you catch a june bug in the visor hard enough to snap your head back a little, open-faced helmets seem like a pretty lame idea.

Whatever was in that swarm was damn big, and actually sort of stung through my mesh jacket and draggin' jeans.

Todd want more.

LMBO. That was too funny.

And, I'm sorry..these stories are great, but I miss the Beast.

It is probably my lousy, slow dialup connection, but there seems to be pics missing??

Sounds like a fun ride. Me I think I would have taken more layers for the higher altitudes, but then I don't do cold so well.

I"m sorry, but there should be a law about seeing snow in June. Holy cow, but great pics!!!!!

PS My son was on my lap looking at the pics with me...he wanted to know if Todd was his daddy. LMAO. He also wanted to know why Todd's feet look funny in the pic where we see him from behind, sitting on his bike. lol

Yes, there ought to be, but it'd be awfully hard to enforce in Utah :) We've had a crazy weather spring and early summer here....from my Memorial Day Weekend ride:

I gave in trying to keep my visor unfogged and deiced, so I just lifted it and dealt with the freezing rain hitting my face....fortunately this was a short journey up to the clouds before heading down the other side, but we hit two high places with weather like this on the last day.

I want my drought ridden desert back!

That's crazy. This is actually the first warm weather climate I've been in, so I'm spoiled now (past 10 years), but I cant say I've ever seen snow even in June at the other places I've lived...NY, Maine, Iceland........
